Is Your Home Safe From Burglars?

By: Paul McIndoe
There is nothing better than getting home from work, locking the door and settling back for an evening of relaxation indoors. Most of us feel safe when we are at home, but would your house still be safe from potential intruders if you were not there?

Luckily there is a lot that you can do to make your home less desirable to burglars; and it doesn't have to cost much to put in place either.

For example, think about a burglar alarm - whilst often proving expensive, they do act as a deterrent for all but the most determined of thieves. If your budget allows you, another item that can work well is a security camera - not only does it help you keep a careful eye on any possible intruders, but its presence alone can put thieves off.

Some ways of reducing your chances of being burgled are a matter of common sense rather than anything else. A good example of this is simply making sure that all your doors and windows are securely locked before you leave your house. If you think any need replacing then make sure you do so at the earliest opportunity.

If you have a front drive, covering it in gravel is an advisable option. Anyone with the intent to burgle a property tends to go for somewhere that can be approached quietly, whilst the noise of gravel often deters thieves.

If you have a garden then it can be a good idea to keep it well-lit; installing security lighting should be enough to put-off any potential intruders. What's more, you can place prickly plants and bushes underneath any windows - it makes the task more difficult for anyone

trying to break in.

It is also wise to be careful about the rubbish you put out. Let’s say for example that you have just bought a new flat screen TV. If you leave the box out to be recycled, everyone who walks past your home will know what expensive item you have recently purchased; therefore, think about getting rid of the box separately if you can. No matter how careful you are, you should still make sure you have adequate home cover. At least then if you are unlucky, you will know that you are covered for anything that is stolen.

There is a lot you can do to minimise the chances of getting burgled in the first place. So, why not check to see how secure your home is.
